Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Approves 2-doseSeries for HPV Vaccine
On October 7, 2016, The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) updated their approval for 9-valent HPV vaccine to add a 2-dose series for adolescents aged 9 through 14 years.
Information (including the approval letter and the revised product label for Gardasil 9) from the FDA is available here.
Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) Votes on 2-dose Series for HPV Vaccine
“HPV vaccine has been more effective than expected and that’s why younger kids need only two doses.” – Noel Brewer, PhD, Chair, National HPV Vaccination Roundtable
On October 19, 2016, The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), an outside expert group that advises the CDC, unanimously accepted the recommendation to move to a two dose series of HPV vaccine. Their decision was based on an assessment from a work group tasked with studying the issue. The CDC typically accepts ACIP’s recommendations, and the CDC said in a press release that CDC Director Tom Frieden, MD, MPH, approved the committee’s recommendation shortly after the vote.
Based on the new HPV immunization schedule, those starting vaccination between ages 9 and 14 can now get just two doses of HPV vaccine rather than three, with the second dose administered 6 to 12 months after the first dose. Three doses remains the recommendation for those 15 and over and for immunocompromised persons. Previously, ACIP recommended all age groups get three doses of the vaccine, with the second dose administered 1 to 2 months after the first, and the third dose administered 6 months after the first dose.

Vice President Biden Delivers Cancer Moonshot Report; Highlights National HPV Vaccination Roundtable
On October 17, 2016, Vice President Joe Biden delivered the Cancer Moonshot report to the President and the American public. The report summarizes the work of the Cancer Moonshot Task Force since its creation in January, and lays out the Vice President’s strategic plan for transforming cancer research and care.
The report promotes HPV vaccination as cancer prevention:
“Under the Cancer Moonshot, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is advancing its efforts to promote cancer vaccines as a safe and effective strategy for combatting various types of cancers. As part of this effort, in September CDC renewed its commitment to the National HPV Vaccination Roundtable for an additional 5 years, which will include increased state level support for this effort. The Roundtable, managed by the American Cancer Society, is tasked with bringing together immunization and cancer prevention stakeholders to provide education, outreach, and training to the public and to health care providers. The National HPV Vaccination Roundtable will be working to increase HPV vaccination rates by decreasing missed opportunities, raising awareness about the importance of vaccinating males and females ages 11-12, and maximizing access to and opportunities for vaccination.”
